Establishment of Diplomatic Relations
Between China and Germany

  China and Germany established diplomatic relations on October 11, 1972, and bilateral ties have since developed steadily. The two countries have engaged in extensive exchanges and cooperation across various fields, including economy, culture, science and technology, education, military affairs, tourism, and local government interactions.

  For many years, Germany has been China’s largest trading partner within the European Union. In 2002, China surpassed Japan to become Germany’s largest trading partner in Asia. According to a report by Germany Trade & Invest (GTAI), China remained Germany’s largest global trading partner for the eighth consecutive year in 2023.

  To date, China and Germany have established 105 sister province, state, and city relationships. Among them, Wuhan and Duisburg became the first sister cities between the two countries, officially forming their partnership on October 8, 1982.
